Stepping into the unknown

The Thrill of Stepping Into The Unknown

People fear the idea of the unknown, yet change is the only constant thing. And when there is change, there is the unknown.

Facing change can be both exciting and intimidating. Every time we encounter change, there is no certainty as to where it will lead us. However, change is inevitable. Though it brings us away from our comfort zone, it is actually a step towards progress.

“The world hates change, yet it is the only thing that has brought progress.”

Charles Kettering

Either you’re the one initiating the change, or changes are happening fast around you that you struggle to catch up, the process of transitioning into what is unknown to you can be scary, overwhelming, and sometimes even painful.

But the good news is, it can also be wonderful.

People who consider change as a threat are those who want to maintain self-preservation. After all, the unknown is full of uncertainty. And uncertainty can really be frightening. But life is full of twists and turns — and most of them are unplanned and unexpected. We either thrive with the changes that are happening in our lives, or we at least try to survive with them.

Being receptive to the reality that change is permanent is a first step towards surviving the unknown. No matter how much you like the status quo, you will somehow have to face certain changes in life, in one way or another. The thought that you can stop change is only an illusion, because change is an unstoppable force.

Without uncertainty, life will be just a boring repetition. Imagine living a life in the same strict routine until the moment you die — surely things can get pretty boring in between.

Those who are resilient and enjoy the uncertainties of life have greater chances of not only surviving, but thriving with change. The idea of discomfort should not always be a thing to fear. The truth is, when you learn to be uncomfortable and flourish despite the discomfort, only then can you conquer your fear of the unknown with an open mind, eager heart, and adventurous spirit.

Sometimes, you decide and create your own change. You evolve with them. You will encounter them in the most unexpected moments and places.

The reality is, change will somehow happen.

And sometimes, you will even long for it to happen.

“In a world of diminishing mystery, the unknown persists.”

Jhumpa Lahiri, The Lowland

But whether you want the change to happen or not, going through such changes will still be very challenging.

There will be moments of doubt and fear.

There are times when you will stumble and fall.

And yet, the unknown is a place that, although intimidating, is full of opportunities for learning and growth. Without uncertainty, life will be just a boring repetition. Imagine living a life in the same strict routine until the moment you die — surely things can get pretty boring in between. Without change and uncertainties, growth will be scarce. And without growth, you’re like living your life as if you’re a breathing dead.

Life is about taking chances. If we will never take a chance, we will never make progress. And progress always requires stepping into the unknown.

Only by stepping into the unknown will you find your true potential. You can either look at the unknown as a place full of uncertainties, or you can view it as a space with boundless possibilities.

Once you feel that thrill of stepping into the unknown within the very depths of your soul, despite the fear of uncertainties, go for it! Sometimes all it takes is just a great leap of faith.

After all, life is about taking chances. If we will never take a chance, we will never make progress. And progress always requires stepping into the unknown.

Life is about taking risks. Though risks can oftentimes be threatening, they can be exciting too. We learn and grow by going out of the perimeter of our comfort zone and by trying things we have never done before.
